Wants vs Needs is really important with outsourcing.
I wanted a graphic designer to make images, create logos, make flyers and all that fiddly stuff that just takes up time if you aren’t really good at it. What I really needed was a VA who could find images to put on my blogs and posts, add in a watermark, make a few corrections and give it to me.
My want would have cost at least 3 times as much as what I needed and would have been a waste of money.
So I sat down and worked out what I wanted in my business, writing a long list of all the things I would love to have. Then I started going back over that list and marked what my business needed. The second list is ALWAYS much shorter.
Don’t skip either of these parts, they are both important. Write down EVERYTHING you want for your business.
Then, whether it’s on paper or digital, get an idea of what groups they belong in. Outsourcing needs, equipment, software, training, coaching, professional services, everything you can think you want for your business has to be listed and grouped.
Next, highlight what your business needs right now! You will have anything from 1 to lots of wants in a group, and out of that number there will be a few that are real needs, what your company has to have now to continue to grow and build.
Write down the needs and now you have your priorities for your business for the next month, months or year to work on adding to your business.
You can even sort your needs into priorities as well. Getting a new printer might not be as urgent as getting a new computer, but if you can get a deal on both, then you get those needs answered. If it’s a choice between the computer or the printer, you know the priority.
It doesn’t mean you won’t ever get your wants, because wants can become needs. What does happen is you aware of what you want when you are hiring for what your business needs right now.
Using the images again, when hiring an outsourcer/Virtual Assistant, your job listing might show that they need to know how to find,
manipulate and add a watermark to an image and upload to a blog or post. Basic need for your business, however, you WANT a graphic designer, so if an outsourcer mentions that they know or want to learn Photoshop, or have a graphic designer interest or background, they are ahead of someone else applying for the job.
You aren’t hiring a graphic designer yet you possibly have one for the future if your want turns into a need. You would let the person applying for the work know that, and let them know that their pay would go up if that happened, so it makes it worthwhile for them to keep up or learn the skills you want for the future.
Your Wants are usually big, bold and expensive, so working out what your business Needs right now, can save you time, money and headaches.
